Oh, oh, Montana, give this child a home.
Give him the love of a good fam'ly and a woman of his own.
Give him a fire in his heart, give him a light in his eyes.
Give him the wild wind for a brother and the wild Montana skies.
Now, some said he was crazy, some are glad he's
gone.
Some of us will miss him, we'll try to carry on.
Giving a voice to the forest, giving a voice to the dawn,
Giving a voice to the wilderness and the land that we live on.
Portions of "Wild Montana Skies"
Words and Music by John Denver
As sung by John Denver at his Wildlife Concert, NYC, 1995
- A tragic loss, may John rest in peace -

Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken,
over-civilized people are beginning to find out
that going to the mountains is going home
- John Muir -

"Decades ago the following words were etched
onto large wooden signs
posted at the state line on all arterial highways leading into Montana:
You are coming into the heart of the West where you will cut a lot of
mighty interesting old time trails. Just turn your fancy loose to range
the coulees, gulches, prairie and mountains and if your imagination
isn't hobbled you can people them with picturesque phantoms of the
past. We have marked and explained many of the most interesting
historical and scenic spots along the highways. Watch for them
and help us to preserve these markers. Here is wishing you
lots of luck and many pleasant miles in Montana."
From the Montana Almanac, beginning Chapter 12 "Travel"
Montana Almanac is a wonderful book written by Andrea
Merrill and Judy Jacobson, 1997, Falcon® Publishing

Colorado is high, having more peaks within its
borders than
any other state. Wyoming is wide, with the breadth of the
plains between the Big Horns and the Grand Tetons.
California is handsome, with a splendor of success.
It takes all three adjectives to describe Montana.
- Donald Culross Peattie -

A Montana poet creates visions in the mind's eye
Not letting you into Nature,
but allowing you to imagine it
Its ever-extending magnificence
Glory and beauty
Simplicity, and infinite complexity
- Resident poet -

Montana
In her height and breadth
Enormity and depth
and sheer splendor
Full of attitude and arrogance
Glances at Man
with amused silence
The force of her Nature
Humbles us
- Resident poet -

While the rest of the world may give you
an inch
Montana is my
quarter mile of peace
- Resident poet -

Lewis and Clark
Great explorers
for a Northwest Passage
Found a land of unique experience
Introduced by a Grizzly
Spit out by the Bitterroots
Larger, harder, longer, higher, more alive
Mother Nature
Suckling Montana to her breast
Did not take kindly
Man's intrusion
Viewing us then
with wary eyes
Viewing us now
unimpressed
- Resident poet -
