Backwoods recreation report for Northwest Montana, including the Northern Swan Range
Avalanche Hazard Scale

For the adventurous and hardy, experienced and seasoned who really know their stuff, Winter in Montana's backwoods can be lots of fun! Whether you are into skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, or snowshoeing, backwoods areas high in the arms of the Northern Rockies provide a wildly beautiful, rugged and pristine, Winter experience in environs hardly affected by the touch of Man. Montana's backwoods are not just for anyone as they are in no way developed, you must break your own trails, and you must be well equipped both in equipment and knowledge so that you remain safe from avalanches and other hazards. But if you have the skills to take on these areas, you will in every way have the thrill of your life. Here is Winter recreation at its radical best!

Only about five minutes from your vacation home, you will find thousands of acres of high mountain wilderness, bowls, and basins in and around the Jewel Basin of the Swan Mountain Range. Accessible by skis and snowmobiles, the Swan Mountains is a rugged abruptly rising range with several high mountain peaks and deep snow depths. Your vacation home is near the northern part of the Swan Range where mountains rise as high as Mt. Aeneas at 7528 feet and snow gets dozens of feet deep. Popular with adventure-minded locals, the Northern Swan Range in and around the Jewel Basin provides all the backwoods skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing you can handle, in awe-inspiring spectacularly wild Winter surroundings.

And about 45 minutes from your vacation home, Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall and Great Bear Wilderness Areas also provide a rugged and wild backwoods Winter experience.

So if you're up for it, and only if you're up for it, do the backwoods and experience a raw in-your-face Winter with a striking visceral beauty in its God-given forms.
