Spring is the time for whitewater rafting, and floating too! Rivers are swollen with
snowmelt, rushing from headwaters high in the mountains into the valleys and lakes below.
The Flathead Valley has two rivers in particular that are excellent rafting rivers. The Middle Fork of the Flathead River runs along the southern boundary
of Glacier National Park, with several stretches of Class III and Class IV rapids. These
intermediate rapids provide a challenging and invigorating experience, with lots of
splash, without being dangerous. The Middle Fork will provide a rockin' fun time for all
your friends and family. The North Fork of the Flathead River
is a decidedly different experience, running from the Canadian border for 58 miles along
the western boundary of Glacier National Park. The North Fork has only mild rapids, Class
I and Class II, but instead provides wonderfully scenic floating experiences. Persons not
seeking whitewater, but access to remote, wild, and magnificently beautiful regions of the
northernmost Rockies, will find the North Fork to be their watery highway through
paradise.
Both the Middle and North Forks of the Flathead River have been federally designated
as "National Wild and Scenic Rivers." This is an honor bestowed on very few
rivers in the United States, and is testament to these rivers extraordinary natural beauty
and recreational fun. These rivers are about 45 minutes from your
vacation home.

Some persons may want to access the Middle and North Forks on their own, using their
own rafts and equipment. But we believe that most persons should make arrangements with
established rafting outfitters in the Flathead Valley. These outfitters have the best and
most recent rafts and equipment and, most important of all, their guides know these rivers so that accidents are far less likely to happen.
Outfitters also provide full, delicious meals on longer trips down the rivers, and offer a
variety of activities to accompany your rafting trip, like horseback
riding and hiking. From long experience, they know how
to have you fully enjoy these rivers and the breathtaking regions they flow through.
